About this listen

"Matt, I need a war."

So begins David Baldacci's new book - a thriller unlike any he's written before. "Matt" is Mathew Pender, of Pender Associates - a shadowy organization that specializes in managing seemingly impossible situations for its clients. Sometimes, those services extend to managing - and creating - armed conflict.

When Matt Pender is asked by his client - the largest defense contractor in the world - to manipulate two nations against each other, a shocking and surprising series of events is set in motion that will possibly bring the world to the brink of World War III.

In this epic thriller with a global backdrop, David Baldacci delivers all the twists and turns, compelling characters, and can't-put-it-down pacing that listeners have come to expect from this master storyteller.

If you are a fan of earlier Baldacci stories involving the Camel Club, you will like this action thriller. A 'secret agent' in a 'secret security organization' is forced into killing for his country. His involvement is complicated when his fiance is killed by the same unknown group that is unleashing chaos on the world.

Definitely and 'escape from reality' action adventure. The characters are smarter than 'average' but the story is more action oriented than cerebral. Kind of James Bondish without the gratuitous lovely costar.

Entertaining Action Story

Balducci at his best. I was asked to come in. Then I was scrambled, spun and then welcomed aboard. Never lagging, always active. A wonderful adventure. Well spoken. Very descriptive. Wish it hadbeen longer.

BETTER THAN GOOD

Why won't these Thriller/Mystery Authors ever involve Is-Not-Real and ALL the B.S. they are involed with. Such as how they tried to Sell a Nuclear weapon to the former government of South Africa. Last time I checked you can't both have a Nuke to sell to someone YET, not have AN6 Nuclear weapons to supposedly protect yourself. Yeah, look up the USS Liberty. That'll SHOCK you awake. Especially if you are a Bible Thumping, Israel comes FIRST good Christian.

Wake up people!!!

Oh as for the book. Decent book look forward to listening to more books with Shaw as the main character.

The first 5 or 6 chapters were a little slow for me. I kept with it and ended up enjoying the story.

Slow start and picks up speed

I like David Baldacci books as a general rule. After reading reviews for The Whole Truth and then listening to it, I can understand why some reviews were critical about a perceived lack of character development. The characters take longer to get to know and understand in The While Truth than other Baldacci books, but it is there and totally worth waiting for.

The story itself also take some time to unfold, but it is very realistic and I found myself listening every chance I had.

One minor quibble with the narration- there were many times that the ‘voice’ of a character changed mid-sentence/mid-monologue to another character, making me second guess who was supposed to be talking. That was annoying, but not a serious problem.

Overall I recommend the book.

Started a bit slow, but great story

This is the first on the series and it took a little time to establish characters…but established they were. A strong but flawed main character surrounded by an interesting ensemble cast. I found it well paced and entertaining. Narration was good as always. Overall, a good listen…
