"A feel-good book guaranteed to lift your spirits." (The Washington Post)

The dazzling favorite about the choices that go into a life well lived, from the acclaimed author of How to Stop Time and The Comfort Book.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better?

In The Midnight Library, Matt Haig's enchanting blockbuster novel, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision. Faced with the possibility of changing her life for a new one, following a different career, undoing old breakups, realizing her dreams of becoming a glaciologist; she must search within herself as she travels through the Midnight Library to decide what is truly fulfilling in life, and what makes it worth living in the first place.

Critic reviews

“A beautiful fable, an It’s a Wonderful Life for the modern age – impossibly timely when we are all stuck in a world we wish could be different.” (Jodi Picoult, author of My Sister's Keeper)

“Haig’s latest (after the nonfiction collection Notes on a Nervous Planet, 2019) is a stunning contemporary story that explores the choices that make up a life, and the regrets that can stifle it. A compelling novel that will resonate with readers.” (Booklist starred review)

“Charming...[Matt Haig] will reward readers who take this book off the shelf.” (Publisher's Weekly)

I’m always on the hunt for good books. Rarely do I find one. THIS IS IT. Stop browsing and read it. I feel like I have a new lease on life. Almost reactivated my Instagram just so I could share it on my story. Sent texts to every contact in my phone instead. My thumbs hurt from manically typing and my sister’s ears are probably bleeding because I’ve chirped at her “you have GOT to read this book” so many times.

This is it.

Wouldn't it be great to see every version of yourself and choose the very best! This is the premise of this story. It inspires all the emotions: sadness, despair, regret, success, happiness. Be kind to yourself and read this.

Thought provoking!

Very repetitive message. “Life is what you want it to be”- over and over and over and over Whiney, and depressing. (Until the last chapter- then the tone is chipper)

I bit slow at first but quickly got me hooked. What an interesting concept. What “regret” would I like to do over?

Loved it

Matt Haig has looked at depression and mental health through a wonderful lens that takes the reader on a fast paced adventure. The narrator has a good voice but her pace was way too slow for me. I listened at 1.25 speed and felt it was much better.

An attention grabbing look at mental health

Anyone who wants to travel with a book in a different way this book is you. If you i are struggling with mental illness this book will hit a few chords but also feels like a therapy session. I could not put it down. Fast paced and easy to read.

Eerily familiar, thought provoking, mythical

The narrator did a wonderful job. As for the book it’s self I thought the story had a great premise and it started off really great and intriguing. As for the story I do believe it could of been cut by a few hours and the I would of gotten the same feeling at the end. Overall it was an ok read to pass the time.

Loved the premise!
