About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Mechanic written and read by Marc 'Elvis' Priestley.

In the high-octane atmosphere of the Formula One pit lane, the spotlight is most often on the superstar drivers. And yet, without the technical knowledge, competitive determination and outright obsession from his garage of mechanics, no driver could possibly hope to claim a spot on the podium. These are the guys who make every world champion, and any mistakes can have critical consequences.

That's not to say the F1 crew is just a group of highly skilled technical engineers, tweaking machinery in wind tunnels and crunching data through high-spec computers. These boys can seriously let their hair down. Whether it be parties on luxury yachts in Monaco or elaborate photo opportunities in gravity-defying aeroplanes, this is a world which thrills on and off the track.

Join McLaren's former number one mechanic, Marc 'Elvis' Priestley, as he tours the world, revealing some of Formula One's most outrageous secrets and the fiercest rivalries, all fuelled by the determination to win.

This is Formula One as you've never seen it before.

Elvis does a great job telling the “behind the sciences story of F1. Interesting for someone new to the sport like myself to learn and better appreciate the pit crews and support teams that make fantastic racing happen.
My only issue was that I felt there was quite a bit of detail left out. Elvis is very respectful of the companies and teams he worked with and it felt like there was a lot left unsaid. However, it is still good listening and provided interesting insight.

Good read - a bit tamed down though

Good story, fun insights, amazing memoir. There is a one two three four five six seven eight nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen word requirement for this… silly

Inside scoop on behind the scenes F1 history, thank you Elvis!!

Elvis does an excellent job narrating - you can pick up the nuances of his struggles, passion, achievements in his voice.

The story is really good too! I very much enjoyed his insights on McLaren, and I learned a few things about Kimi Raikkonen.

it is always better when the author reads it

I'm kind of a casual F1 fan, Mark Presley's YouTube channel actually helped get me interested in F1. just seeing the complexity of the cars and watching them describe them and the aerodynamics and other mechanical engineering aspects of formula 1. this book is really really cool, especially a great inside look at the spy gate scandal. in my opinion, Mark if you're reading this and I know it's spelled your name wrong I'm on a hands-free headset right now, but Mark you should write an entire fuck about the spy gate scandal. with as much detail as possible. Even from your perspective it was so intriguing the way that they came in investigated your laptop, literally a movie could be written about your story.

awesome

Great stories and enough technical detail to keep the read interesting. Lewis timing was wrote about as I remember it happening!!

Great read for insiders. Brought back memories as I watched the races he spoke about.

This is the first motorsport audio book I've listened to but I feel I can say it is probably one of the best out there. As an F1 fan this was beyond the level of insight I expected to get from this experience and it felt like exactly that, an experience. Marc really tells the whole story and takes you along on his wonderful journey through F1 and you are left feeling like you were there with him. Top notch work.

Incredible Insight into an Incredible Sport

Truly great look behind the pitwall. A look into driver mechanic relationships, inter team squabbles, and day-to-day life of a F1 Mechanic. Thankfully this book contains brilliant stories and insight without the tabloid esc fodder or attempt to burn former colleagues. I found Marc on youtube prior to finding this book. I have passed this book along to my fellow F1 buddies.
