In this book, first published in 1972, he recounts a Zuni myth first recorded a century ago by the anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing. Hillerman's version of the story, written to be listened to by children ten years old and up, will have equal appeal for adults with an interest in Native American culture.

"In our society," Hillerman explains, "this would be called a 'Bible story.' Like stories based on the Old Testament, this narrative is intended to teach both the history and morality of a people." It tells the consequences of a drought in which Zuni crops were ruined and the tribe was forced to accept charity from neighboring Hopis.

Wonderfull way to understanding other cultures

The narrator was easy to listen to and did an excellent job of narrating this book period. The book is another example what you're an amazing versatile author Tony Hillerman is. This book is a pure joy to listen to.

Legendary myth never written

Dragonfly gives everyone a reason to strive for kindness towards others, especially those less fortunate. A good bed time story.

Loved the symbolism

I enjoy all of Tony Hillerman's works and this telling of the Zuni myth of the dragaonfly (and epilogue comparison to Christian origin stories) is no exception. i appreciate the narrator's talent and gift of pacing, placing emphasis and gravity where needed, and skill in pronouncing the Dine' words. it is a short read, but very enjoyable and helpful in understanding some of the culture surrounding the native peoples of the American southwest.

Poor narration of a white man’s story

Neither Hillerman nor Cushing were Zuni. Neither the text nor the reading of it sound authentic. If you want Zuni stories as told by the people themselves, read the book The Zunis Self Portrayals. That’s how they tell their stories.
