The 1989 Ironman World Championship was the greatest race ever in endurance sports. In a spectacular duel that became known as the Iron War, the world's two strongest athletes raced side by side at world-record pace for a grueling 139 miles.

Driven by one of the fiercest rivalries in triathlon, Dave Scott and Mark Allen raced shoulder to shoulder through Ironman’s 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike race, and 26.2-mile marathon. After 8 punishing hours, both men would demolish the previous record - and cross the finish line a mere 58 seconds apart.

In his new book, Iron War, sports journalist Matt Fitzgerald writes a riveting epic about how Allen and Scott drove themselves and each other through the most awe-inspiring race in sports history. Iron War goes beyond the pulse-pounding race story to offer a fascinating exploration of the lives of the world’s two toughest men and their unquenchable desire to succeed.

Weaving an examination of mental resolve into a gripping tale of athletic adventure, Iron War is a soaring narrative of two champions and the paths that led to their stunning final showdown.

The story itself is awesome! However, the tone of the narrator is disappointing. Choosing a more stoic, masculine voice would have made this complete.

Great story with lackluster narration.

I love these types of stories and this one is fascinating but the narration was down right horrible. It was too painful to finish.

Interesting story but horrible narration

Having just competed at Kona, this book was a fascinating and inspirational insight into the the history of the race and Ironman. The story is amazing uncovering over its duration the battle of wills and battle of self coupled with some scientific insight into how the body and mind works.

Inspiring and informative

Awesome story, narrator brings the energy to the intricate details of the events leading up to 1989.

Powerful

Would have preferred the author as the narrator like in his book How Bad do You Want It.

Really enjoyed the story, but not the narrator

Great book. Not just about the race but the history of triathlon, bio of Allan and Scott, and exploration into what makes us (triathletes of all levels) tick! Must read.

Amazing story of an amazing race! Wow!!!

Good story for sports fans. The Iron War was great but the writing here is just ok. The reader’s performance is terrible. He seems to think he’s acting in a Shakespeare play.

Excellent story. The narrator's style just didn't jive for me. Still highly recommended. The inspiration is there, it's up to you (and me) to leverage it.

But that narration...

The story and the content is great. I have read the book several times and decided to get it on audible. The person reading the book simply ruins it. I am sure he is a nice person, but his enunciation makes it sound like a robot is reading it and it takes some of the emotion of the story.

Great book, by the voice over person not so good

A great telling of an epic sports battle between to amazingly gifted but entirely different athletes. I appreciated the story being used as a backdrop to give a history of triathlon, some of the myth/science of endurance sports and stories of other inspiring athletes.

An excellent read for any endurance athlete
